What these numbers are, and what they are not

Every figure on this page comes from an equation fitted to a population. That makes them useful for setting a starting point and tracking change over time, and unreliable as a statement about any individual. An estimate that is right on average can be well out for you, and the further you sit from the population the equation was built on, the further out it goes.

The honest way to use them is as a baseline you then adjust from evidence. Take the estimate, act on it for a few weeks, measure what actually happened, and correct. The number the calculator gives is the hypothesis, not the answer.

BMI and body fat answer different questions

BMI is weight divided by height squared. It is a screening tool for populations, and it was never intended to classify an individual, which is why a muscular person can read as overweight while someone with little muscle can read as healthy at a body composition that is not. It is useful because it is cheap and consistent, not because it is precise.

Body fat estimates from tape measurements get closer to the question most people are actually asking, but carry their own error, typically several percentage points against a laboratory method. Both are far more useful as a trend than as a single reading: measured the same way, at the same time of day, the direction of travel is real even when the absolute number is not.

Energy estimates need correcting against reality

TDEE is built from a resting metabolic rate equation multiplied by an activity factor. The equation is the reliable part; the activity factor is a coarse bucket, and people routinely place themselves a level too high. If your weight is not moving the way the estimate predicts after two or three consistent weeks, the estimate is wrong and your measured result is right. Adjust to what actually happened.

Is BMI accurate?

It is accurate as a population screening measure and unreliable for individuals. It uses only height and weight, so it cannot distinguish muscle from fat. A muscular person can register as overweight while someone with little muscle registers as healthy.

Which health calculator should I start with?

TDEE if your goal involves weight, since energy balance drives that, and body fat or BMI if you want a composition baseline. Treat whichever you pick as a starting estimate and correct it against what actually happens over a few weeks.

Why do ideal weight calculators give different answers?

Because they use different formulas, most of them devised decades ago for clinical dosing rather than for health targets, and they genuinely disagree. Read the output as a broad range rather than a single correct weight.

Are these calculators medical advice?

No. They apply published formulas and each page links its source and states its limits, but they cannot account for your health history, medication or body composition. For anything clinical, speak to a professional who can examine you.
