How to measure for baseboards
Any trim calculator starts the same way, by turning a room into baseboard linear feet.
Add up the length of every wall at floor level. For a plain rectangular room that is simply 2 × (length + width), but measure wall by wall in anything with an alcove, a chimney breast or a bay, because the perimeter of an irregular room is easy to get wrong from a sketch.
Then decide about doorways. A 32-inch door opening is 2.67 ft of wall with no baseboard on it, so three doors is about 8 ft. Whether to deduct depends on the room:
- One or two doors: don't bother deducting. The offcuts you generate at every corner will more than cover it.
- Four or more doors, or wide openings: deduct them, then keep the 10% waste. Otherwise you are buying a whole extra length you will not use.
- Cased openings and closets usually still take baseboard on the return walls, so measure those.

Notice the 16 ft column is not simply half the 8 ft column — it rounds up separately. That matters because the real decision is not quantity but where the seams land.
Buy the longest pieces that fit the wall
A joint in the middle of a long wall is the hardest thing in trim carpentry to hide. It will open slightly as the house moves, and it catches the light. Wherever a wall can be run in a single length, do it — a 14 ft wall wants one 16 ft piece, not two 8 ft pieces.
Where a seam is unavoidable, use a scarf joint: two opposing 45-degree cuts that overlap rather than butting square. It gives more glue surface, and if it does open the gap is a thin diagonal line instead of a black vertical slot. Land it over a stud so both halves can be nailed.
Against that, 16 ft lengths are awkward to transport and will not turn a tight hallway corner. Measure your access before ordering a van-load of long trim.
Coping versus mitering
The single technique that separates professional-looking baseboard from obviously amateur baseboard: cope your inside corners.

The reason coping wins is that almost no room is truly square. A mitered inside corner cut at 45 degrees only closes if the walls meet at exactly 90, and a wall that is one degree out leaves a visible wedge of gap. A coped joint — where one piece is cut square into the corner and the second is cut to follow its profile — closes tight at any angle, and stays closed when the house moves.
For outside corners, measure the actual angle rather than assuming 45. A framing square or an angle finder costs very little and saves a lot of recutting on a wall that turns out to be 91 degrees.

MDF is the sensible default for painted baseboard: it is cheap, dead straight, and has no knots to bleed through. Its weakness is water, so use solid timber or PVC in bathrooms, laundries and anywhere a mop goes.
Finish before you fit
Prime and paint the baseboard before it goes on the wall, ideally with two coats laid flat on sawhorses. Cutting in along a fitted skirting is slow, fiddly work, and no amount of masking tape makes it as clean as a flat coat. Afterwards you only fill the nail holes, caulk the top edge and touch up.
- Caulk the top edge where trim meets wall, not the bottom against the floor, which needs to move.
- Nail into studs where possible, near the top and bottom of the profile.
- Fill nail holes with a lightweight filler after painting, then touch up — filling before painting leaves visible dimples.
- Leave a small gap at the floor for wood floors to expand; shoe moulding or quarter round covers it.
- Let the trim acclimate in the room for a few days, particularly MDF in a humid house.

How this baseboard calculator works out its numbers
Piece counts are perimeter × (1 + waste) ÷ piece length, rounded up, for 8 ft and 16 ft stock with a 10% default waste allowance.
- No door deduction is applied. Enter a reduced perimeter yourself if the room has several doorways; a 32 in opening is 2.67 ft.
- Counts assume pieces are not joined, so each wall run is cut from a fresh length. In practice offcuts get reused on short walls, which is part of why 10% is usually generous on a simple room and tight on one with many corners.
- The 16 ft count is not half the 8 ft count, because each rounds up independently. Both are shown so you can pick by seam placement rather than quantity.
- Not included: shoe moulding or quarter round, adhesive, nails, filler and caulk.

Should baseboard corners be coped or mitered?
