How many sheets of drywall?
Whether you call it drywall or sheetrock, this sheetrock calculator works the same way.
Measure the face area of everything you are covering — walls plus ceilings — and divide by the sheet size. Do not deduct for studs, and only deduct openings larger than a door; the offcuts around small windows and outlets are exactly what the waste allowance is for.

In drywall sheets per square foot terms: a 4×8 covers 32 ft², a 4×10 covers 40 ft² and a 4×12 covers 48 ft². Divide your area by 32 and add 10% for a quick 4×8 count.
Sheet size is really a taping decision
Bigger sheets are not about saving money on board — it costs roughly the same per square foot either way. They are about butt joints: the seams across the short cut end of a sheet, where there is no tapered edge to hide the tape.
Tapered long edges sit in a shallow factory recess, so a taped joint finishes flat. A butt joint has no recess at all, so tape and three coats of mud must be feathered 10 to 12 inches either side to disguise the bump. They are the hardest seams to finish invisibly, and every one you avoid is real time saved.
On a 12 ft wall, one 4×12 sheet run horizontally gives you zero butt joints. Two 4×8 sheets give you one, right in the middle of the wall at eye level. Set against that, a 4×12 sheet of ½ inch board weighs about 82 lb and does not go up a staircase easily.
Drywall mud and tape quantities
Hanging is roughly half the job. Working as a drywall mud and tape calculator, these are the standard trade quantities per 1,000 ft² of board:

A bucket is the standard 4.5 gallon pail. Drywall screws per sheet works out at about 32 for a 4×8 on a wall — every 16 inches around the perimeter and down each stud — and closer to 40 on a ceiling, where spacing tightens to 12 inches because gravity is working against you.
Paper tape is stronger and the right choice for flat seams and every inside corner. Self-adhesive mesh is faster and more forgiving for a beginner, but it needs setting-type compound over it rather than all-purpose. Use setting compound — the powder sold in 20, 45 and 90 minute versions — for the first coat and repairs, then lightweight all-purpose for finish coats, which sands far more easily.

The garage rule catches people out on renovations: an attached garage almost always needs ⅝ inch Type X on the shared wall and ceiling, and inspectors do check it. And behind a shower, ordinary drywall is not a substitute for cement board however good the tile work is.
Hanging mistakes worth avoiding
- Hanging walls before ceilings. Ceilings go first so the wall sheets support their edges.
- Butting sheets tight. Leave a hair of gap; board expands and tight seams crack.
- Butt joints in the middle of a long wall. Stagger them, and keep them off eye level where you can.
- Overdriving screws through the paper face. A screw that breaks the paper holds nothing.
- Too much mud on the first coat. Thin coats sand easily; thick ones crack and take days to dry.
- Sanding instead of feathering. Good finishing is done with the knife, not the sander.
- Skipping primer. Bare board and dried compound absorb paint differently, so every seam flashes through the topcoat.

How this drywall calculator works out its numbers
Sheet counts are area × (1 + waste) ÷ sheet size, rounded up, using 32 ft² for a 4×8 and 48 ft² for a 4×12, with a 10% default waste allowance.
- Face area, not net area. No deduction is made for framing or openings, since offcuts around windows, doors and outlets usually absorb them. Deduct large openings yourself by reducing the area you enter.
- Mud, tape and screw figures are standard trade quantities per 1,000 ft² for a three-coat finish: about 370 ft of tape, 1.8 buckets of 4.5 gallon all-purpose compound and 10 lb of screws. A level 5 skim coat uses considerably more mud.
- Screws per sheet assume 16 in spacing on walls and 12 in on ceilings.
- Not included: corner bead, adhesive, primer and the framing itself.

Do I need to prime drywall before painting?
Yes. Bare paper face and dried joint compound absorb paint at different rates, so without primer every taped seam shows through as a visible band. A drywall primer or PVA sealer evens the surface out.
