How many pavers do I need?
Paver counts depend on size. A common 4×8 inch brick paver covers about 0.22 ft², so roughly 4.5 pavers per square foot. For 12×12 pavers it's 1 per square foot. This calculator shows both, with waste added for cuts.
Pattern and waste
Add more waste for angled layouts: 5% for a straight running bond, 10–15% for herringbone or 45° patterns that need many cut pieces at the edges. Order the extra up front from the same batch so any color variation between production runs doesn't show in repairs.
What goes underneath
Pavers need a compacted gravel base (use the paver base calculator) topped with about an inch of bedding sand, plus an edge restraint so they can't spread. The base does the work — skip it and the prettiest pavers still sink and heave.
