Crushed stone as a base
Angular crushed stone compacts into a solid, load-bearing base under driveways, patios, sheds and retaining walls. Plan 4–6 inches for driveway and patio bases, installed and compacted in 2-inch lifts so the whole depth locks up tight.

Crushed stone runs about 1.4 tons per cubic yard. One ton covers roughly 100 ft² at 2 inches, or 70 ft² at 3 inches. It's almost always bought in bulk by the ton or yard rather than bagged.
Which size to order
A dense-graded mix such as crusher run (¾-inch minus), which includes stone dust, compacts hardest and is ideal for bases. Clean, single-size stone (like ¾-inch washed) drains better and belongs in French drains and behind retaining walls, where you don't want fines trapping water.
