How deep for pea gravel?
2–3 inches is typical for paths and patios; 3–4 inches over landscape fabric for play areas and dog runs. The math is area × depth, and we add 10% because rounded pea gravel shifts and settles into the base.
Coverage and ordering
One ton of pea gravel covers roughly 100 ft² at 2 inches deep. It's sold bagged (50 lb ≈ 0.5 ft³) or in bulk by the cubic yard or ton; bulk is cheaper once you're past a dozen bags. Because the stones are smooth and round, plan on a sturdy edge to keep them from scattering onto the lawn.
Where pea gravel shines (and doesn't)
It's comfortable underfoot and drains freely, making it great for patios, fire-pit areas and pathways. It's a poor choice for driveways or steep slopes, where angular crushed stone stays put far better and won't rut under tires.
