Plan extra for hardwood
Hardwood often needs 10–15% waste — you'll cut boards to length and discard a few for knots or color. A box commonly covers ~20 ft². Let the wood acclimate in the room before installing.
Solid vs. engineered
Solid hardwood can be sanded and refinished many times but moves more with humidity, so it's best nailed down on or above grade. Engineered hardwood has a real-wood top over a stable plywood core, tolerates moisture better, and can float or glue down over concrete and in basements.
Acclimation and racking
Acclimate boxes in the room for several days to a week so the wood reaches the home's humidity — installing too dry or too wet leads to gaps or cupping later. Before nailing, "rack" boards from several boxes at once to blend color and grain across the whole floor.
