How much vinyl plank flooring do you need?

Use 10% waste for a simple rectangular room and 15% for a diagonal layout, a room with many alcoves, or a job spanning several rooms and a hallway. Vinyl plank needs less waste than hardwood because there is nothing to cull — the planks are manufactured, not milled, so there are no knots or colour outliers to reject.
SPC, WPC and the rest of the acronyms
Luxury vinyl plank is sold under a fog of initials that all describe the same basic thing with different cores:

The number that actually predicts how long the floor lasts is the vinyl plank wear layer, measured in mil.
The wear layer is the clear top film that takes the abuse. Six mil is builder-grade and will show traffic patterns within a few years. 12 mil is a sensible residential minimum, 20 mil is what you want with dogs or in a hallway, and 28 mil is commercial. Thickness of the plank itself tells you about feel and stability, not durability — those are different specs and shops routinely quote the flattering one.
Click-lock or glue-down
Most DIY vinyl plank is click-lock floating: planks snap to each other and rest on the subfloor, held only by their own weight and the trim around the edges. It is fast, forgiving and removable. Glue-down bonds each plank to the subfloor, which is more stable across large open spans and in rooms with big temperature swings, but demands a much flatter subfloor and is a genuine commitment.
Floating floors need an expansion gap of about ¼ inch at every wall and fixed object, hidden by baseboard or quarter round. This is the single most common LVP failure: vinyl expands with heat, and a floating floor pinned tight at the edges buckles into a ridge across the middle on the first hot afternoon. Sunrooms and large south-facing rooms are where it happens.
Subfloor flatness is the real prerequisite
Every LVP manufacturer specifies a flatness tolerance, typically 3⁄16 inch over 10 feet. Rigid SPC bridges small dips better than flexible plank, but nothing bridges a real hump: high spots telegraph through as visible ridges and put point loads on the click joints, which then separate.
- Check with a long straightedge before ordering, not on installation day.
- Grind down high spots and fill low ones with levelling compound.
- Sweep and vacuum thoroughly. A single stone under a plank is a permanent bump.
- Test concrete for moisture. LVP itself is waterproof, but moisture trapped underneath grows mould.
- Acclimate 48 hours in the room, flat and unopened, at normal living temperature.
Layout and transitions
Run planks parallel to the longest wall or toward the main light source, and stagger end joints by at least 6 to 8 inches — check the manufacturer's minimum, since some require more. Never let joints line up into a repeating staircase pattern, which is the giveaway of a rushed install.
Plan transitions before you start: T-moulding where the floor meets another hard surface at the same height, a reducer where it meets something lower, and a threshold at doorways. Floating floors also need a transition or expansion break at any doorway narrower than the room, because a continuous run through a bottleneck cannot move freely.
Most LVP is waterproof through its full thickness, which is why it dominates kitchens, bathrooms and basements. Boxes are floor area × (1 + waste) ÷ coverage per box, rounded up, using 24 ft² per box and a 10% default waste allowance.
- Box coverage varies from about 18 to 30 ft² with plank dimensions. The figure on your box is the authority; enter your area against that instead if it differs.
- 10% waste is lower than hardwood's 12% on purpose. Vinyl plank is extruded rather than milled, so there are no knots, splits or colour outliers to cull — waste here is cutting only.
- Floor area, not net area. No deduction for cabinets, islands or hearths; reduce the area you enter if those are significant.
- Not included: underlayment, transition strips, trim, adhesive for glue-down, and levelling compound.
