How many boxes of laminate?
Flooring boxes are the unit you actually buy in, called packs in the UK, so this doubles as a laminate flooring pack calculator. Enter a price per box and it becomes a laminate flooring cost calculator too.
Divide your area by the coverage printed on the box and round up to a whole box, because suppliers do not split them. Add 10% for cuts, or 15% for diagonal layouts and rooms with lots of corners.
Box coverage is not standard. Most laminate boxes hold 18 to 24 ft², but thicker boards and wider planks come in smaller boxes, so two products covering the same room can need noticeably different box counts. Always check the label rather than assuming 20 ft².

Keep one unopened box back as attic stock. A plank damaged in three years cannot be matched from a discontinued range, and replacing a single board is far cheaper than relaying a floor.
What laminate flooring costs
Laminate material runs about $1 to $4 per square foot, with professional installation adding $2 to $5 per square foot. For a 180 ft² room that is roughly $180 to $720 in material and $360 to $900 installed on top.
Budget separately for underlayment (unless pre-attached), transition strips at every doorway, quarter-round or new skirting to hide the expansion gap, and disposal of the old floor. On a small room those extras can rival the flooring itself.
Acclimate and leave an expansion gap
Laminate is a floating floor that expands and contracts with humidity. Let the boxes sit flat in the room for 48 hours first, and leave a quarter to three-eighths inch expansion gap around every wall and fixed object, hidden by skirting or quarter-round. Omitting the gap is the single most common cause of buckling.
Underlayment and AC rating
Most laminate needs a foam underlayment unless it is pre-attached. Check the board's AC rating for durability: AC3 suits most homes, AC4 to AC5 handles heavy or light-commercial traffic. Buy every box from the same production lot so the printed grain pattern stays consistent across the floor.
Laminate mistakes that waste boxes
- Assuming 20 ft² per box. Coverage ranges from 18 to 30 depending on plank size. Read the label.
- Ordering the exact area. Every room has cuts; the first and last rows are almost never full width.
- Skipping acclimation. Boards laid straight off the van shrink and gap in the first month.
- No expansion gap. The floor buckles and there is no fix short of lifting it.
- Ignoring plank direction. Running planks along the longest wall or towards the main light source looks materially better.
- Keeping no attic stock. Ranges are discontinued constantly.
