How to calculate square footage
For a rectangle, square footage is simply length × width. For a circle it's π × radius², and for a triangle it's ½ × base × height. Pick the shape, enter the measurements, and set "number of areas" if you're adding up several identical rooms. Switch the units toggle to work in metres and the result still reports square feet alongside square metres.
Square feet, yards, metres and acres
Different trades use different units. Flooring and paint are figured in square feet; carpet is often sold by the square yard (9 ft²); most of the world works in square metres (1 m² = 10.76 ft²); and land is measured in acres (43,560 ft²). The calculator shows all four at once so you never convert by hand.

To estimate materials, take the square footage and divide by the coverage of what you're buying — a box of flooring or a gallon of paint lists its coverage on the label. Add about 10% for waste and offcuts. For odd-shaped rooms, break the space into rectangles and triangles, total each, and you have the whole floor.
